Kelly Burkhart, Microbiologist, National Animal Health Laboratory Network

Kelly Burkhart received a degree in Microbiology from Iowa State University. She spent 12 years in industry as a research scientist with Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, where her primary focus was Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory virus (PRRS), responsible for clinical development to determine suitable vaccine candidates.

Kelly joined the NAHLN Program Staff in 2007, and is responsible for quality assurance within the network. Kelly works with the laboratories on their annual NAHLN Agreement for Participation, coordinates Quality Management System trainings, and performs quality audits within the NAHLN laboratories. She is a Certified Quality Auditor through the American Society for Quality (ASQ), and is also an auditor for the American Association for Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) accreditation program.

Kelly enjoys spending time with her husband, Bret, two children, Hannah (17) and Jessica (15), and two cats, Ollie and Charlie. In her spare time she appreciates time spent reading and doing cross-stitch.
